What to know about Urgent Care Clinic's, freestanding ER's; from a mom.

By now everyone has seen, been to, and know people that go to freestanding ER's, minute clinics, "doc in a box" - there are several ways we refer to these health care facilities that provide emergency care in a location that is not attached to a hospital. My sister in law and her husband (in the photo above) just opened an urgent care clinic in Ellenton, Florida, with the goal to provide better healthcare to their community. I did some research on the most frequently asked questions and have the following to offer from what I have learned from my family and by researching the subject.
For the most part they are equipped and staffed to the same standards as an emergency department (or ER) in a hospital. If further care is needed, such as surgery or further observation, the facility will transfer the patient to the most appropriate next level of care as would be the case in any hospital based ER.
When should you go to the hospital ER vs. free-standing ER?
A patient should choose to go to the closest ER to them or call 911 if IMMEDIATE assistance is needed. Many choose freestanding ER's because the wait time to be seen is generally much less. Urgent Care clinic's are great for the entire family; walk ins are welcome and are great for injuries and illness.
How does payment work?
Some freestanding ER's accept insurance and some are cash only; so check before you go.
Will I see a physician?
Freestanding ER's are often staffed with board-certified physicians, urgent care facilities are staffed with physicians, a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. All of these are able to offer the care needed.
Can I call ahead or go online to reserve a spot?
Some free-standing ER's offer online registration/reservations. This is a great option for filling out paperwork and moving the process along when you don't feel well.
Do these facilities provide care for infants and children?
Yes, in fact, over 30% of the patients seen are children under age 10.
